“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble…Therefore will not we fear…Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled…There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God…God is in the midst of her…” Ps. 46:1,2a, 3a,4a, 5aE
The river ran peacefully from where our mission team climbed into the rafts, but the real adventure lay ahead. We paddled heeding the commands of our guides as we maneuvered around boulders and through the rapids. Until my guide shouted, “High Side!”
The 5 in my raft scrambled to the top side of as it tipped on a boulder. One problem. The 3 men were at the top, leaving no room for me and my daughter-in-law. Thrown from the raft and caught in the current we headed down river without a raft.
We all travel a river, a river of life, experiencing times of peace and calm, times of rushing water, times of boulders throwing us into the deep. Those times make us wonder if we are going to make it through.
There is another river available for travel. It comes complete with rushing water and boulders, but it has a guide that keeps keeps you on the high side, carrying you through the rough waters.
One of these rivers will run dry, the other springs eternal in the spirit of every believer and carries you through this life into eternal life. Which river are your riding?
I think today of those who are being flooded by the real floods of the hurricane and hold them in my prayers. If you are overwhelmed by the floods in your life, I will be glad to pray for you. Leave me a note in the comments or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
May God be your refuge and strength.
