“That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him…and gave him to be the head over all things to the church. Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.” Eph. 1:17, 23
One thing I enjoy about the smaller country churches revolves around the common occurrence of fellowship, a.k.a. church dinners. The tantalizing aromas of fried chicken, chicken ‘n dumplings and numerous casseroles drifting from the kitchen even tempt the pastor to shorten the sermon. Stomachs begin to rumble. And the best part? After filling ourselves with all the main courses, there is a table filled with pies, cakes, brownies and newest dessert recipes. Our appetites satisfied, we waddle back home, only to realize later, the satisfaction lasts a short time.
“All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.” Ecc. 6:7
Many live life in emptiness seeking to fill it with food that satisfies for the moment but leaves them emptier than when they began. God desires to fill our lives with His goodness.
“Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.” Isa. 55:2
God desires to fill us with His fulness through Jesus Christ.
“And of his fulness have all we received and grace for grace.” John 1: 16. “…and gave him[Christ]* to be the head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.” Eph. 1:22b, 23
Did you get that? We the body of Christ are the fulness of Him. He has chosen us to complete Him on this earth and the only way that is possible is because He is the One who fills or completes us. He wants us to become fat with His character and His gifts.
“And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God.” The main course, God in the knowledge of the love of Jesus Christ. Don’t just pick at it, eat until your full. He never runs out.
“These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.” John 15:11. “For this cause we also…pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;” Col. 1:9 Dessert is served and there is much more as you dig into God’s word.
What God sets before us is the food of eternal life. And as it suggests, it never leaves us wanting for anything more.
“And he said to me, “‘Write, Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb'” And he said to me, “‘These are true words of God.” Rev. 19:9
You are invited. Won’t you come, taste and see the goodness of God?
Praying we might be filled with the fulness of God in Christ Jesus every moment of every day to His glory and honor.
P. S. The picture is from a mission trip we took with a group of teens to the Navajo Reservation. We went to bless and received much more than we gave.
