I Pledge Allegiance

“And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house be divided against itself that house cannot stand.” Mrk 3: 24,25

Why do I keep hearing, “It is hard to be a Christian” and “Christianity doesn’t work”? First being a Christian is easy. God made the plan simple enough a small child can understand and believe. It only becomes hard when we try to live it out on our own strength, thinking we can keep one foot in the world and the other in the heavenlies. Christ has seated believers in the heavenly places even as we walk on this earth. The problem comes in dividing our allegiance.

“No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” Lu 16:13

And others say, “Christianity doesn’t work.” Excuse me? Christ is Christianity. True Christianity does work for its foundation is Jesus Christ. Our lack of understanding what true Christianity is causes the problem and is cured by knowledge of  God’s word and the Spirit’s instruction. When we believe Christianity is about a list of dos and don’ts instead of a relationship, we bring ourselves back into a prison of performance that has no pardon. We have put the proverbial cart before the horse trying once again to work for goodness rather than to work out of goodness. Jesus calls us to be separate from the world.

“…Come out of her, my people, that you may not participate in her sins and that you may not receive her plagues;” Rev. 18:4

“…we are the temple of the living God; just as God said. ‘I will dwell in them and walk among them; And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.’ Therefore, come out from their midst and be separate,” says the Lord…” 2Cor. 6:16b-17

“Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company corrupts good morals.'” 1Cor. 15:33

Sound impossible? It is in our own strength. But God in us and the knowledge of Christ’s love, the depths and heights of His love, fill us with the fullness of God, and it is no longer us working to be good but Christ working His good in and out of us. All we have to do is follow Him, allowing Him to mold us into His image and use our minds, our hands, feet, our mouths for His glory. We become the living sacrifice Paul talks about in Romans 12.

Do we live out the Christian life perfectly? No. It is a continual learning process taught to us through the word and the Holy Spirit. Does it ever seem hard? Yes. Divided allegiance leads to a divided heart, robbing us of peace and strength.

Praying we, God’s people, remember who we are and who our God is and pledge our allegiance to Him above all else. Come out from the world and be separate.
