Where is God in All This Mess?

Do the reports of our news media disturb you? Bring fear into your heart? Do your own circumstances bring despair as hours drag into days and days into months into years? Do you find your self asking, “Where is God in all this mess?” If you answer, “Yes,” you are not alone. The Psalmist wondered and God gave him answers to ease his mind and ours in Psalm 42. God knew we needed more, so He gave us the rest of scripture, too. Praying you are encouraged by His word.

“As the deer panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. DSCF1600My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?”…”Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the Lord JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation. Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.” (Isa. 12:2,3).

“My tears have been my meet day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?”  “Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O Lord, have we waited for thee; the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee. With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.” (Isa. 25:8,9).

“When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.”  “I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.”  “…Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.” (Ps. 122:1; Rev. 21:3).

“Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.”  “But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.” “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” (Ps. 40:17; Isa. 41:10).

“O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee…all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.”  “But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.” “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;” (Job 23:10; 2Cor. 4:17).

“Yet the Lord will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.”  “My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.” “And they sang the song of Moses…of the Lamb, saying, Great and Marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints…”  ( Ps. 5:3; Rev. 15:3).

“I will say unto God my rock, Why has thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?”  “But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped.”  “For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.” (Ps. 73:2; Isa 41:13).

“As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me: while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God?”  “Beloved think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you…If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you; on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.” (1Peter 4:12,14).

“Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.”  “Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters… and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and…neither shall cease from yielding fruit.”  “The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.” (Jer. 17:7,8; Nahum 1:7).

When trouble comes, when you feel alone and your strength weak, where is God? “…I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up…one cried unto another and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.” (from Isa. 6:1,3). And He will never leave you for He has chosen you to dwell in. “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you…For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but…the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.” (Rom. 8:9,15).
