Thank you for sticking with me all week as we followed some twos in scripture. The final two brought to mind a song we often sang at camp, “Oh How I Love Jesus”. We did it with a twist by asking teens at the end of the song, “Oh (name), do you love Jesus?” The one replied, “Oh, yes, I love Jesus.” The song leader followed with, “Tell me why do you love Jesus?”. The answer, “Oh, this is why I love Jesus, because He first loved me.” What’s your answer? Before you reply, let me share with you my final two for the week.
A Pharisee asked Jesus to name the great commandment. He asked for one. Jesus gave him two, the first being the great one. Isn’t that just like Jesus to give us more than we ask! Jesus’ answer is found in Matthew 22:37,39.
“…Thou shalt love the Lord thy God…” Love-God chose to find joy in you, not withholding any good and perfect gift from you that is in His power to give. Likewise, you are to love Him. “We love him, because he first loved us.” (1John 4:19). . “…presenting your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” (Romans 12:1b).”…If a man love me, he will keep my words; and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.” John 14:23.
“…with all your heart…” Love Him with your undivided passion. “Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.” Psalm 73:25-26.
“…with all your soul…” Love Him with the undivided inner being that no one sees except by the life you live in Him. “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other…or hold to the one, and despise the other…” “…like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” “…the fruit of the Spirit is love…If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the spirit.” “…for one is your Master, even Christ…” (Matt. 6:24a; Rom. 6:4b; Gal. 5:22a,25; Matt. 23:10).
“…with all your mind…” Love Him with an undivided understanding, unclouded by the world’s philosophies and standards. “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” “Set your affections (mind, in some translations),on things above, not on things on the earth…ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him.” (Rom. 12:2; Col.3:2,9b,10).
“And the second…Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” Love(not withholding any good thing in your power to give) your neighbor as God has loved you. “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” John 13:34,35.
And now, what is your answer? Do you love Jesus? Why do you love Jesus? Feel free to comment.
Along with Paul’s prayer in Ephesians three, my prayer for you who read, hear and heed the word of God is that you know the depth, height and width of Christ’s love. Be filled with the fullness of God, whereby all you are and do is because the love of Christ dwellling in you compels and holds you fast to the course, causing His love in you to flow through you and out of you to others. God bless you and may we worship together in spirit this weekend, giving God praise and glory. Hope to see you Monday.
