God’s Gift

“…unto us a son is given…”

 “I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.”

“…that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.”

Through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Isaiah prophesied His coming. David identified Him as God’s Son. The angel declared Him, the Son of God. He is the only begotten of God, the One and only One declared to us for, “No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.” John 1:18.

It’s easy to believe Jesus is the son of man. History tells us He existed.  Born of a woman, He lived and died as all men do. But with one incredible difference, He lives. He told John in Revelation 1:17,18, “Fear not: I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen…”

Over 500 witnesses saw Jesus before He ascended to the Father. Stephen saw Him with the Father. “But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God…”Acts 7:55.

As a child, He was born and had a beginning. As a Son, He is eternal.

King Nebuchadnezzar saw the Son six hundred years before His birth as a child in Daniel 3:23-25. “…Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonied, and rose up in haste, and spake…Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king. He answered…Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.”

God the Father declares His Son at His baptism…

“And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water; and lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying , This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” The declaration is echoed in the gospels of Mark and Luke,

John’s gospel gives an eyewitness account of John the Baptist. “And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.” John 1:32-34.

His disciples declared Him, “…saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.” Matt. 14:33.

The centurion at the foot of Jesus’ cross said, “…Truly this man was the Son of God.” Mk. 15:39.

Jesus declared himself to the blind man He healed saying, “…Dost thou believe on the Son of God? He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?  And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.” John 9:35-38.

Even the demons know who Jesus is. “And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God…For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit…”Mark 5:7,8.

Why is it necessary to know Jesus is the Son of God? “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?” 1John 5:4,5.

And why did God move men to write these things? “But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” John 20:31.

“…unto us a son is given…”

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16.
