“Ask, and it shall be given you: seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:” Matt. 7:7.
Paul asks the Lord to fill the Colossians with the knowledge of God’s will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. Knowledge teaches us the will of God. Wisdom chooses to follow God’s will, and understanding answers the most often asked question of “Why?” follow God’s will. Understanding, knowing how things work together, becomes our motivator.
How do you gain understanding?
“Ask, and it shall be given you…Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart… Make me to understand the way of thy precepts: so shall I talk of thy wondrous works… I am thy servant; give me understanding, that I may know thy testimonies… The righteousness of thy testimonies is everlasting: give me understanding.” (Ps.119:33,34;27;125; 144).
“…seek, and ye shall find…How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way… Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart. They also do no iniquity: they walk in his ways… incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.” (Ps.119:103,104; Ps. 119;2,3; Prov. 2:2-6)
“…knock, and it shall be opened unto you…Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his face continually…And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint… Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints… Pray without ceasing.” (1Chron. 16:11; Luke 18:1; Eph. 6:18;1Thess. 5:17).
What is understanding? “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding…Because it is written, Be ye holy, for I am holy.” (Prov. 9:10; 1Pet. 1:16).
What spiritual understanding are you needing today? Come to the One who understands and freely gives to those who ask. “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need… If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him… Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights…” (Heb. 4:15,16. Matt. 7:1; James 1:17a).
All that’s left is to ask. The Father will meet you at your need.
