What Does Your Temple Look Like?

“According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.” 1Cor. 2:10.pexels-photo-345135.jpeg

My friend and I walked along the deserted one lane dirt road leading to the construction site of my future home. We gasped in amazement when we caught sight of what, the day before, was only a foundation. Atop it sat four outside walls, partitions, a roof and several men laying the roof. I’m not sure why our reaction was astonishment. Not just one but several master builders had joined forces to help our house go up. The men in my husband’s family remind me of those God called to use their talents to build the temple, all being gifted carpenters. Anything these men build is built right, built to last.

Paul cautions the Corinthians to “take heed how he buildeth thereupon”, speaking of the foundation of the gospel of Christ, Paul has already laid. He then cautions them to use only the best materials for they will be tried by fire. It’s important what is used lasts.

“Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every mans’ work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. “ 1Cor. 3:12,13.

Gold…Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ… Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience(endurance, NASB)… I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich… (1Pet. 1:5-7; James 1:3; Rev. 3:18a)pexels-photo-567983.jpeg

Silver…”The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Thou shalt keep them, O lORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever… And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness… I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” (Ps. 12:6,7; Mal. 3:3; Rom. 12:1).

Precious stones…Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it… Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. for the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than find gold. She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her… the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel… (Prov. 3:13-15;Matt. 13:45-46;Prov. 20:15b).

Wood, hay, stubble…For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch… THIS PEOPLE DRAWETH NIGH UNTO ME WITH THEIR MOUTH, AND HONORETH ME WITH THEIR LIPS; BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR FROM ME. BUT IN VAIN THEY DO WORHSHIP ME. TEACHING FOR DOCTRINES THE COMANDMENTS OF MEN.” (Mal. 4:1;T Matt. 15:8,9).

What do your walls look like, strong and enduring or a little shaky?

SOME CREATIVE FUN: Think about this week’s posts concerning the church, add your own perception and build a main character profile using the church personified. Do it in list form or paragraph style to describe your character.

For example: Her beauty extended beyond the softness of her eyes, the welcoming smile. It emanated from a source deep within.

Now you take it from there describing your character (male or female) , his/her greatest need and what makes the person likeable. Have fun.

Leave your thoughts in comments and next Thursday, if I get several, I will post them and you can vote on your favorite, excluding your own.

  1. This is really creative!!!! It’s also astonishing how fast something can be built with multiple hands. I think in a way it’s like how God can perform a miracle. We only need Him and He is always promising at His work.
