In retracing our steps in Genesis, Exodus and now Leviticus, the Lord shows His design to make a people unto Himself, to lavish His love on, to gift with His goodness, and freely walk in fellowship with Him throughout eternity.
To Israel the Lord said:
“…Ye shall inherit their land, and I will give it unto you to possess it, a land that floweth with milk and honey: I am the LORD your God, which have separated you from other people…And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the LORD am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine.” Lev. 20: 24,26.
To believers on the other side of the cross the Lord says:
“And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God: as God hath said, I WILL DWELL IN THEM, AND WALK IN THEM; AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE. WHEREFORE COME OUT FROM AMONG THEM, AND BE YE SEPARATE, saith the Lord, AND TOUCH NOT THE UNCLEAN THING; AND I WILL RECEIVE YOU. AND WILL BE A FATHER UNTO YOU, AND YE SHALL BE MY SONS AND DAUGHTERS, saith the Lord Almighty.” 2 Cor. 6:16-18.
I recall separating an egg white from the yolk for a cake recipe. If a tiny speck of the yolk followed the white into the mixing bowl, the whites flatly refused to fluff into the cloud needed to make the cake light. As the speck of yolk kept the cake from fulfilling its purpose, so does sin keep people from fulfilling God’s purpose in them.
Sin is the great divider separating man from a holy God. Jesus is the quotient to that division. He frees us from the penalty of sin, the power of sin, and the presence of sin now and forever.
The Penalty and its Payment:
“In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return…Gen. 3:19; For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord…Rom. 6:23; This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am chief…1Tim. 1:15; And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the firstbegotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, and hath made us to be kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion forever.Amen.” Rev. 1:5,6.
Sin’s Power Rendered Powerless:
“Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin…But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness…For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.”(Rom. 6:6,7, 17,18,20-23).He that overcometh shall inherit all things and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.” Rev. 21:7.
The Presence of Sin Missing on Our Record and in our Future:
“I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins…Isa. 43.25; Notwithstanding, in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven…Luke 10:20; Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin…Rom. 4:7,8; And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.” Rev. 21:27.
“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” 2Cor. 5:21.
Leviticus shows us the only way to approach a holy God is in holiness, not through animal sacrifices or laws but through the shed blood of Jesus Christ. Leviticus points us to the cross of Christ.
Have you been made the righteousness of God in Christ? He is the only way. A final day of separation is on the horizon when all sin will be cast away. Only the righteous, those with their names written in the Lamb’s book of life will remain. Where will you stand?
