THREE JUDGES, THREE SERVANTS
A Judge of Great Faith
Deborah, a prophetess and judge, glorified the Lord in service. Read her story in Judges 4 & 5.
“And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time. And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.” Judges 4:4,5.
“God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan before the children of Israel. And the hand of the children of Israel prospered, and prevailed against Jabin the king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.”
Deborah and Barak broke into song.
“Praise ye the LORD for the avenging of Israel, when the people willingly offered themselves. Hear; O ye kings; give ear, O ye princes; I, even I, will sing unto the LORD; I will sing praise to the LORD God of Israel.”
A Servant of Great Faith
“For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who call his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.”
After the lord of the servants returned from his journey and received of the first servant the increase, he said,
“Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” Matthew 25:14.
Today’s Servants of Great Faith
“I will love thee, O LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies…it is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect…Ps. 18:1-3,32Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.” 1Cor.15:58.
A Judge of Little Faith
Gideon, his name means warrior but we first encounter him hiding and fearful. Yet, hear what the angel of the Lord says to him.
“And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.” Judges6:13 Gideon took one step of faith in obedience to the Lord. After the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, he took another, then another after seeking assurance of his calling. This man who began with little faith is recorded in Hebrews 11’s hall of faith.
A Servant of Little Faith
“He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them. His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” Matt. 25:22,23.

“Then came the disciples to Jesus apart and said, Why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you…Matt. 17:20; For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith…Rom. 12:3; Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong…1Cor. 16:13; And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.” Luke 17:5.
A Judge of No Faith
Abimelech was not satisfied being a judge. He had to be king. His evil deeds included killing his seventy brothers, all but one, Jothan, escaped, so there would be no threat to his role as king. In Judges 9, Jothan brings a curse to Abimelech for the murders.
“Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech…and their blood he[God] laid upon Abimelech their brother, which slew them; and upon the men of Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren….”
In his final battle, a woman in a tower drops a millstone on Abimelech’s head. His armorbearer finishes him off at his request.
“Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father in slaying his seventy brethren: And all the evil of the men of Schechem..upon them came the curse of Jothan…”
The Unprofitable Servant
“And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo there thou hast that is thine…Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents…And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” From Matthew 25:24-30.
Those of No Faith Today
“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteouseness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them…Romans 1:18,19; the wages of sin is death…6:23a; But the fearful and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all iars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” Rev. 21:8.
Those with great faith, it is a gift. Remember it is God’s gift, boast in Him.
Those with a little faith, it is a gift. Remember it is God’s gift, be thankful.
Those with no faith, God has a gift for you.
“But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” John 20:31.
