“According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.
For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid,
which is Jesus Christ.”
While the only foundation capable of building an everlasting abundant life upon is Jesus Christ, the world’s wisdom proposes many philosophies born our of man’s wisdom. I am not a student of philosophy. When my youngest son sat in a college philosophy class he tried to explain some of these wise ponderings to me. With eyebrows arched I simply replied, “I’m sorry but none of this makes any sense. Everything goes in a circle and adds only more unanswerable questions.”
Paul gives us insight to the foundation of the wisdom of the world in his letter to the Corinthians.
“Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God.
For it is written,
HE TAKETH THE WISE IN THEIR OWN CRAFTINESS.
And again, THE LORD KNOWETH THE THOUGHTS OF THE WISE, THAT THEY ARE VAIN.
Therefore let no man glory in men…”
1 Corinthians 3:18-21.
I’m with Paul again as he writes,
“For I determined not to know any thing among you,
save Jesus Christ,
and him crucified.”
1 Cor. 2:2.
I am amazed at the number of people who adopt one philosophy or another,(I did read a few explanations before starting this thought. I came away shaking my head yet, again). Philosophy holds no market on the foundations people rely upon for life. Some hold to absolute power, others to wealth, and false religions. The religious elite of Jesus’ day held to knowledge, self-righteousness, and works.
Jesus warned the people to beware of false prophets, identifying them as looking good and sounding good on the outside but on the inside full of rotten fruit. As He concluded the warning, He said,
“Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven;
but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Many will say to me in that day,
Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name?
and in thy name have cast out devils?
And in in thy name done many wonderful works?
And then will I profess unto them,
I never knew you:
depart from me,
ye that work iniquity.”
Matthew 7: 20-23.
Jesus proceeded from there to relate the parable of the wise man and the foolish man building their houses on a strong or not so strong foundation.(Check out my post, “Love’s Foundation”, on April 10 or find it in Matthew 7:24-27.
In this instance Jesus makes it clear our works do not provide a proper foundation for life. They may provide a sense of accomplishment and well being in this world but do nothing to establish our eternal home. Works not a by product of the fruit of the Spirit of God in us will not carry over into eternity. Only one foundation will do for our eternal home and it requires being built in the here and now. Only one material will do for this foundation.
“For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
“How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem: whom they slew and hanged on a tree:
Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; Not to all people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.
And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of the quick and dead.
To him give all the prophets witness,
that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.”
“And did all drink the same spiritual drink:
for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them:
and that Rock was Christ.”
1 Corinthians 10:4.
Have you drank the water from the Rock? It is living water.
“But whosoever drinketh of the water I shall give him
shall never thirst:
but the water that I shall give him
shall be in him a well of water
springing up into everlasting life.”
