“And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.” Luke 5:36.
Our group of teens’ task for the week focused on tearing down a shelter on our campground. This year with the covid 19 virus planning became next to impossible. Restrictions changed daily and continue to change. Our plans revolved around a mission trip to the Navajo Reservation in AZ. The virus hit the people hard and their numbers continue to rise. Please, keep them in your prayers. All of this changed our plans.
I say, our plans, but God had planned for us from the very beginning of this year’s trip to bring about His plan. Last September we started with a total of 9 signing up for mission trip 2020, a rather small number for us but not unheard of. Our fundraising progressed slowly through the end of 2019. Then by the end of February the Lord provided all we needed for the trip. Then came covid.
By the 9th of May plans changed. The teens and 3 adults wanted to stay home and rebuild a shelter that had stood for close to 40 years. Suddenly our funds increased over the next 3 weeks and we had the money to completely rebuild the shelter. No, we would not repair the old. The old one fulfilled its purpose. We wanted to build a new one that would bring greater glory. God provided all we needed.
When Jesus came to earth He instituted a new and better way. He fulfilled the purpose of the old opening the way for the new.
“Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.” Matt. 5:17.
“For if that first covenant had been faultless,
then should no place have been sought for the second…
FOR THIS IS THE COVENANT THAT I WILL MAKE WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL AFTER THOSE DAYS, SAITH THE LORD; I WILL PUT MY LAWS INTO THEIR MIND, AND WRITE THEM IN THEIR HEARTS: AND I WILL BE TO THEM A GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE TO ME A PEOPLE..
In that he saith,
A new covenant, he hath made the first old.
Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.”
Jesus fulfilled the old to become the new and better way.
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”John 14:6.
In Christ Jesus, we are,
“a new creature: old things are passed away,
behold, all things are become new.”
2 Cor. 5:17.
Before the new can come in the old must pass away. Our sin before God confessed and repented. Our trust put in the work of Christ on the cross. In this the old man dies, the one born in sin, and the new is put on in the holiness of Christ.
We are told to,
“put off concerning the former conversation the old man,
which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
And that ye put o the new man,
which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”
After the old shelter came down, the teens worked to clean up the rubbish and clear the way for the new shelter to be built. May we be diligent to clear away those things in our lives opposed to our new life in Christ and continue daily to live in the new life that is ours in Him. It doesn’t just happen. It is the working out of our salvation.
Why do we tend to hang on to the hold instead of building on the new?
