Walking With Jesus
Are you a history buff? As a teen, history with all its dates and names bored me. But when I began to see it as the building blocks of life, and saw the people in the stories that have through God’s grace brought us to this day, I began to see history as a part of my present. The history of those led by God teaches me how to live with hope. They show us how to live past the great defeats and glory in the victories. They remind us, as He did for them He does for us. In the history books of the Old Testament we meet the great Captain over it all.
We meet the Captain of the host who lead His people to victory.
“And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold,
there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand:
and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him,
Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?
and he said,
Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come.
And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship…”
Jesus, our Captain,
- He is able to deliver.
“For the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you,
until ye were passed over,
as the LORD your God did to the Red sea,
which he dried up from before us, until we were gone over:
That all the people of the earth
might know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty:
that ye might fear the LORD your God for ever.”
- He is faithful.
“Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon,
that have I given unto you,
as I said unto Moses.”
Most would agree, the Book of Judges is about a people who,
“In those days there was no king in Israel:
every man did that which was right in his own eyes.”
But the overlooked theme is Israel’s deliverance. Each judge served as a deliverer, pointing us to the time of our great Deliverer. Jesus Christ delivers from darkness, death, and the destroyer.
“The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light;
they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death,
upon them hath the light shined…Is. 9:2;
Then spake Jesus again unto them saying,
I am the light of the world:
he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness,
but shall have the light of life…John 8:12; …
the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.” 1John 2:8b.
“Jesus saith unto her,
I am the resurrection, and the life:
he that believeth in me, though he were dead,
yet shall he live:
and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.
Believest thou this…”
“Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same;
that through death
he might destroy him
that had the power of death,
that is the devil;
and deliver them who through fear of death
were all their lifetime subject to bondage…Heb. 2:14,15;
And the devil that deceived them
was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone,
where the beast and the false prophet are,
and shall be tormented day and night
for ever and ever.” Rev. 20:10.
Do you need deliverance? Go to Jesus, He is our Deliverer.
She sought her kinsman redeemer.
“And she went down unto the floor, and did according to all that her mother in law bade her. And when Boaz had eaten and drunk and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn: and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down.” Ruth 3:6,7.
Ruth’s actions mirrored those of a servant relying on the complete mercy of her master. Boaz’ response reflects our Kinsman Redeemer who is able and willing to pay the purchase price of redemption.
Christ Our Kinsman:
“But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son,
made of a woman, made under the law,
To redeem them that were under the law,
that we might receive the adoption of sons…Gal. 4:4,5;
For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one:
for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren…Heb. 2:11.
Christ Our Purchase Price:
“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin;
that we might be made the righteousness of God in him…2Cor. 5:21;
But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.
Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost
that come unto God by him,
seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens: Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once,
when he offered up himself.” Heb. 7:24-27.
Christ Our Willing Payment:
“Therefore doth my Father love me,
because I lay down my life,
that I might take it again.
No man taketh it from me,
but I lay it down of myself …John 10:17-18;
Greater love hath no man than this,
that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13.
Do you know this love that paid the purchase price for your sin, frees you from darkness, death, and the destroyer? History shows us He did it for others. The present shows us He is still doing it for all who will believe.
