Better Than New
For my eighth grade graduation my Granny spent hours restoring an old cedar chest marred with layers of varnish and paint into a beautiful hope chest with hearts in the wood grain.
Judah’s image as God’s people was marred. God used His prophet Zephaniah to uncover Judah’s idolatry, disobedience, treachery, and violence and promised a work of restoration for them that would leave them singing.
“Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel: be glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Jerusalem…The LORD hath taken away thy judgments, he hath cast out thine enemy: the king of Israel is in the midst of thee: thou shalt not see evil any more…
The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty;
he will save,
he will rejoice over thee with joy;
he will rest in his love,
he will joy over thee with singing.”
Zephaniah 3:14,15, 17
Not only does Israel have the sure hope of restoration but so do all people who put their trust in Jesus Christ.
“For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” Romans 8:18
We were born sinners under the sentence of death both body and soul. But both body and soul will be restored to what we lost when sin entered the world. This body of flesh born in weakness will be restored to a glorious body like our Lords.
“Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be:
but we know that, when he shall appear,
we shall be like him;
for we shall see him as he is.
And every man that hath this hope in him
even as he is pure.”
“So also is the resurrection of the dead.
It is sown in corruption: it is raised in incorruption:
It is sown in dishonour: it is raised in glory:
It is sown in weakness: it is raised in power;
It is sown a natural body: it is raised a spiritual body…
And as we have borne the image of the earthy,
we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.”
1 Corinthians 15:42-44,49
Before the body receives its restoration the spirit must be restored from its sinful state to its holy state. God created us in His image. Our spirit bore His likeness. Sin marred that image.
Jesus Christ came to restore God’s image in us. Jesus…
“came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name;
which were born,
not of blood,
nor of the will of the flesh,
nor of the will of man,
but of God…
Verily, verily, I say unto thee,
Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit,
he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
That which is born of the flesh is flesh;
and that which is born of the spirit is spirit.
Marvel not that I said unto thee,
Ye must be born again.”
When born of the water, the cleansing of the Word of God, and the Spirit, we then bear the Spirit of God in us as He conforms us to that image.
“For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son…Romans 8:29;
But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord,
are changed into the same image from glory to glory,
even as by the Spirit of the Lord…
2 Corinthians 3:18
And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
And that ye put on the new man,
which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness…
And the glory which thou gavest me
I have given them;
that they may be one, even as we are one.
I in them, and thou in me,
that they may be made perfect in one…”
Then there is the final restoration when all things are made new. Not only new but better for there will be no sin to enter into it. This too, comes through the work of Christ.
“Therefore if any man be in Christ,
he is a new creature;
old things are passed away;
behold, all things are become new…
“For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind…Isaiah 65:17;
“And I saw a new heaven and a new earth:
for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away;
and there was no more sea.
And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem,
coming down from God out of heaven,
prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying,
the tabernacle of God is with men,
and he will dwell with them,
and they shall be his people,
and God himself shall be with them,
and be their God.
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes;
and there shall be no more death,
neither sorrow, nor crying,
neither shall there by any more pain:
for the former things are passed away.
And he that sat upon the throne said,
I make all things new.
And he said unto me,
for these words are true and faithful.
And he said unto me,
It is done.
I am Alpha and Omega,
the beginning and the end.
I will give unto him that is athirst
of the fountain of the water of life freely.”
Yes, The Lord will sing over Israel and us, who are His. All glory to God.
Are you drinking of the water of life? Jesus still offers it to you yet today. It restores your spirit to all God created you to be.
