“I am Alpha and Omega,
the first and the last:
and, What thou seest, write in a book,
and send it unto the seven churches…
Write the things which thou hast seen,
and the things which are,
and the things which shall be hereafter;”
Over the past twenty plus years my husband and I planned, prepared, and packed as we organized mission trips for a group of teens. We saw some amazing sights, learned many valuable lessons, and saw lives changed.
In the Book of Revelation we witness the risen Lord Jesus Christ. He is the bridge taking us into chapters two and three revealing the church age – the things which are. Here He teaches us how to prepare for the greatest travel adventure his followers will ever have. It will be a trip out of this world and He is the bridge to take us there. He reveals “the things which shall be heareafter.”
Personally, I believe after the church age*, after –
“the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout,
with the voice of the archangel,
and with the trump of God:
and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
Then we which are alive and remain
shall be caught up together with them in the clouds,
to meet the Lord in the air;
and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”
Our passage for this trip comes at a high price – one we could not pay. But the one who, “loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,” He paid the price.
He is the Lamb found in Revelation 5:9,10 who –
and hast redeemed us
to God by thy blood
out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
And hast made us unto our God
kings, and priests:
and we shall reign on the earth.”
Preparing for our mission trips includes deciding our destination. What John is shown in Revelation 4 describes our destination and the first one he saw.
“behold, a throne was set in heaven,
and one sat on the throne.
And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone:
and there was a rainbow round about the throne,
in sight like unto an emerald.
And round about the throne were four and twenty seats
and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting,
clothed in white raiment;
and they had on their heads crowns of gold.
And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices:
and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne,
which are the seven Spirits of God.
And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal;
and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne,
were four bests full of eyes before and behind.”
Notice only one sits on the throne. Those around him worship him for He is –
“Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty,
which was, and is, and is to come …
Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power:
for thou hast created all things,
and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”
He was in the beginning. He is with us now. He will come back to set up his kingdom. Is He the one sitting on the throne of your life?
On this journey in the things which are – the church age – we are being prepared for life in the things hereafter. The salvation, justification, and sanctification which is ours when we receive Jesus Christ, God is working in us today for the day of our glorification. On that day our voices will join the voices , the thousands and every creature –
“Saying with a loud voice,
Worthy is the Lamb that was slain
to receive power, and riches, and wisdom,
and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.
And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth,
and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying,
Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power,
be unto him that sitteth upon the throne,
and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.
And the four beasts said, Amen.
And the four and twenty elders
fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever.”
In preparing for the trip that will take us out of this world, let us join John being in the Spirit, and seek to learn to worship our Lord in spirit and in truth.
“But the hour cometh, and now is,
when the true worshippers
shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth:
for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
God is a Spirit:
and they that worship him
must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
Father, may we who are now, be immersed in your Spirit and in your Truth that we may see you as you are, hear your voice, and walk in the power and fruit of your Spirit. May we learn to worship you, the Almighty and the Lamb for you alone are worthy.
*I know there are varying beliefs on the church’s being caught up/raptured. One day we will all know the truth. Until then let’s not let it be a dividing point. For one day it will happen and we who follow Christ, will all meet Jesus in the air. God bless.
