Blessings for the New Year

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me;

 because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings…”

Isaiah 61:1

IMG_0621Many hope for a better year than the one coming to a close. We are ready for some good tidings. Jesus says in Luke’s gospel he is the fulfillment of Isaiah’s scripture concerning good tidings.

“THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME,

BECAUSE HE HATH ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL

TO THE POOR;

HE HATH SENT ME TO HEAL THE BROKENHEARTED,

TO PREACH DELIVERANCE TO THE CAPTIVES,

AND RECOVERING OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND,

TO SET AT LIBERTY THEM THAT ARE BRUISED,

TO PREACH THE ACCEPTABLE YEAR OF THE LORD.”

(4:18-19)

Jesus closed the book and told the waiting audience,

“This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.”

Luke 4:21

The good tidings find meaning in the gospel – the good news – the blessing of God upon our lives. What about you? Do you want God’s blessing on your life for the coming year? If so you desire to receive God’s highest good for your life. Jesus outlines that good for us as he begins to preach to the poor.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit –

“For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” Isaiah 57:15

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3

“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” James 4:10

“Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:3,4

Before we can receive the blessing of God we must understand we have nothing to offer him. We come to him, “poor in spirit”. We need a new spirit, one born from above.

Jesus explained it to Nicodemus when he said,

“Verily, verily, I say unto thee,

  • Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God…
  • Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
  • That which is born of the flesh is flesh;
  • and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
  • Marvel not that I said unto thee, ye must be born again.” John 3:3,5-7

To receive the blessing of God hear the good tidings. Jesus became poor to give us the riches of God – his highest good for us. When we humble ourselves before the Lord, we recognize our greatest need –  forgiveness of sin. He bought our forgiveness with his death. Paul tells us in Galatians 4, when we receive this blessing, God adopts us as his children.

“And because ye are sons,

God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son

into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

Wherefore thou art no more a servant but a son;

and if a son,

then an heir of God through Christ.”

(4:6,7)

Now that is good news transcending anything the world can throw at us.

  • God is our Father.
  • Jesus is our Redeemer.
  • We have an inheritance for the kingdom of heaven is ours.
  • We’ve been made rich in Christ Jesus.

I’m hoping to share other blessings over the next few posts. It’s a good way for us to start the New Year with encouragement. Hope you will join me. And thank you for blessing me with your visits and the words you write for our Savior’s glory. As you continue to bless others may you be blessed.
