Are you a good test-taker? Do you prefer a pass/fail test to a graded scale test? Would you rather see 5 questions on the test or 50? Paul exhorted? Commanded? the Corinthians to take a test at the end of his second letter. It’s a test we can benefit from. But first, let’s return to the beginning for some review.

  1. Paul began this letter noting the comfort and hope belonging to all the saints. He reminded the saints of God’s faithfulness to His word, our security in Christ as the chosen of God, and our security found in the witness of the Holy Spirit in us.
  2. Paul packs the middle of this letter with the promises, purpose, and God’s perfecting of His saints through trials, comfort, encouragement, and instruction.
  3. Then at the end, Paul halts it all to call us to take a test.

This Weeks Scripture Passage:

“Test yourselves

to see if you are in the faith;

examine yourselves!

Or do you not recognize this about yourselves,

that Jesus Christ is in you—unless in deed you fail the test …

Finally, brethren, rejoice, be made complete, be comforted, be like-minded, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.” 2 Corinthians 13:5,11(NASB95)

For Thought: What kind of questions would you expect to see on this test?

Our Prayer:  Heavenly Father, open our understanding that we may know we are your saints. No matter the trials we face, help us walk in the assurance of Christ in us. Open our eyes to see what you see in our hearts and minds. Help us recognize whether Jesus Christ is in us or not. And if any of us fail the test, show us that today can be our day to do a retake—our opportunity to receive Christ as our answer. Amen.

How’s Your Foundation?

“Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation, a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.” Isa. 28:16.pexels-photo-276092.jpeg

“Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation …For other foundation, can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ…Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God…upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it… Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, BEHOLD, I LAY IN SION A CHIEF CORNER STONE, ELECT, PRECIOUS: AND HE THAT BELIEVETH ON HIM SHALL NOT BE CONFOUNDED…(1Cor. 3:11; Matt. 16:16,18; 1Pet. 2:6.)

…a stone…You continued looking until a stone was cut out without hands, and it struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay, and crushed them…And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which will never be destroyed, and that kingdom will not be left for another people; it will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, but it will itself endure forever… The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord, and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever. (Dan. 2:34,44, NASB; Rev. 11:15 NASB.)

…a tried stone…Then was Jesus led up of the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil… Seeing then we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin… And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.( Matt. 3:1; Heb. 4:14,15;Phil. 2:8)

…a precious cornerstone…The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner… Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, who you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the STONE WHICH WAS SET AT NOUGHT OF YOU BUILDERS, WHICH IS BECOME THE HEAED OF THE CORNER. Neither is there salvation in any other: for  there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Ps. 118:22; Acts 4:10-12).

This Jesus is to those who come to him, “…as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious…Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, THE SAME IS MADE THE HEAD OF THE CORNER. AND A STONE OF STUMBLING, AND A ROCK OF OFFENCE, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient; whereunto also they were appointed.” 1Peter 2:4,7-8.

I don’t know whether this quote originated with my brother-in-law but I remember him saying, “Jesus is either a stumbling stone or a stepping stone.”  Which is He for you?

“…a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste…For the scripture saith, WHOSOEVER BELIEVETH ON HIM SHALL NOT BE ASHAMED. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. FOR WHOSOEVER SHALL CALL UPON THE NAME OF THE LORD SHALL BE SAVED.” Rom. 10: 11-13.

Will you try to flee the wrath that will come or are you standing on the sure foundation of Jesus Christ? By the way, there is no place to flee or hide and there are no other choices. Which is yours?
