Keeping the New Heart

blogcherry-178149__340“Keep thy heart with all diligence;

for out of it are the issues of life:”

Proverbs 4:23

In my previous post I introduced you to my brother-in-law. After the heart he was born with grew too weak to sustain life, he had a successful heart transplant. After some recovery time, he experienced new life. But his new life required diligence in care and exercise to keep it strong. When we receive a new spiritual heart from God through faith in Jesus Christ, we experience a new life.

“Marvel not that I said unto thee,

Ye must be born again…

And have put on the new man,

which is renewed in knowledge

after the image of him that created him…

Christ is all, and in all.”

John 3;7; Colossians 3:10,11b

Our spiritual birth comes with a new heart creating a new person. Frank’s new heart eventually grew weak with age but our new heart is to increase in strength with age through delighting –

“in the law of God after the inward man.”

Romans 7:22

Our new heart strengthens as we fall in love with our heavenly Father. If we desire it to stay like new it begins by delighting in the law of God. And that law is –

Mark 12:30

 This verse explains what we mean when we speak of a new heart.

  • It is the seat of your emotions and personality;
  • It is the seat of your thinking, knowledge, and understanding;
  • It is the seat of your abilities.
  • It is the sum total of who you are.

In Christ Jesus you are a new person with power over your emotions, your thinking, and what you do. His love for you and your love for him is the strength behind the power.

Guard your new heart and strengthen it in love through the power of Christ in you. Following are some suggested exercises and care you can undertake to keep your heart strengthened in love.

“With all thy soul…

“put on the new man,

which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him…

Put on…bowels(a heart) of mercies,

kindness, humbleness of mind,

meekness, longsuffering…forgiving one another…

above all…put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.”

(From Colossians 3:10-14)

With all thy mind…

“And be not conformed to this world:

but be ye transformed

by the renewing of your mind,

that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable,

and perfect will of God…

Ponder the path of thy feet,

and let all thy ways be established.”

Romans 12:2; Proverbs 4:26

With all thy strength…

“Finally, my brethren,

be strong in the Lord,

and in the power of his might.

Put on the whole armour of God,

that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”

Ephesians 6:10,11

When the heart is filled with love for God it guides our will, keeps our thoughts pure before God, and strengthens us to walk in all his ways.
